Inspired by 2012 Grange, Penfolds has worked in partnership with Saint-Louis, the oldest glassmaker in Europe and one of the most prestigious crystal houses in the world, to create a distinctive objet d'art service vessel. Each decanter comes with a special box and a bottle of 2012 Grange.

99 Points, The Wine Advocate  -  2012 Penfolds Grange Shiraz
Very deep purple black in color, it opens on the nose with complex earthy/meaty/savory notes, soon giving way to baked blackberries, plum preserves, hoisin and Chinese five spice with dabs of sandalwood, licorice, menthol and vanilla. The palate reveals a surprisingly open, rich, full-bodied expression exuding a powerhouse of velvet-lined decadence.

Still, it characteristically possesses that rock solid “Grange” backbone of firm tannins and great freshness expressed in a real lively lift to the finish. And the finish is epically long. There are some stylistic similarities here to the opulent, gregarious 2008 vintage, perhaps just lacking ever so slightly in the same exhilarating abandonment of winemaking protocols for the celebration of the fruit and sites. That said, this is unquestionably a stonking great Grange!”

The original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia.

Crafted utilising fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and structured Shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. With an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951, Grange clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.

"Black olive and plum notes form the base of the 2015 Shiraz St Henri. This vintage includes 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives a bit of lift and a leafy, floral note on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied, with a firm, structured feel and ample tannins to ensure 20-plus years of longevity."

The 2016 vintage provided an ideal opportunity to create a bona fide Penfolds Special Bin, rare and true to the Penfolds ‘House Style’. Two special Shiraz single-vineyard parcels were blended to create something beguilingly beautiful and different. The impact of the much-touted 2016 South Australian vintage on two vineyards from time-proven Grange growers has produced a Penfolds Shiraz of superb structure, balance and varietal definition.

Both single-vineyard parcels reveal their own regional truths, highlighting the spoils of Clare Valley and Barossa Valley. This wine sensorial and structurally delivers more than the sum of its parts. Framed by French oak, the assemblage of Shiraz is altogether different.

Indeed, an authentic Penfolds Special Bin that will reward and evolve with careful cellaring.

Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak.

Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

The single-vineyard Magill Estate Shiraz is intrinsically linked to Penfolds beginnings. Sourced from the original Magill vineyard on the edge of Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, fruit is crushed, fermented and matured on-site at the original Penfolds Magill winery, established in 1844.

Magill Estate Shiraz is an elegant, medium-weight style with velvety texture and fine tannins, matured in both French and American oak. It is a sleek, contemporary wine, yet crafted the original way: hand-picked, vinified in open fermenters and then basket pressed to complete fermentation in barrel.

The Penfolds St Henri style is a dramatic contrast to Grange. St Henri is pure, unadorned Shiraz, virtually alone among high quality Australian reds in that it has never relied on new oak. It was created in the mid-1950s(first commercial vintage 1957) and gained a new lease on life in the 1990s asits quality and distinctive style became better understood. Penfolds St Henri is rich and plush when young and gains soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. Before bottling it is matured in old, 2000 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, but impart no oak character. A proportion of Cabernet is used to improve structure, but in Penfolds St Henri, Shiraz stands alone.

"Coming from the small, single vineyard surrounding the original Magill winery, the deep garnet-purple colored 2013 Shiraz Magill Estate reveals gorgeous black plums and blackberry tart aromas with spice box, vanilla, lavender and cola suggestions plus some cigar box hints. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, rich and expressive, it has a rock solid backbone of ine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity, inishing with great length and harmony. Best Magill Estate ever? It is certainly the finest I’ve tasted" - Lisa Perrotti-Brown
